Bio-GO-SHIP: The Time Is Right to Establish Global Repeat Sections of Ocean Biology

چکیده

In this article, we present Bio-GO-SHIP, a new ocean observing program that will incorporate sustained and consistent global biological observations into the Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP). The goal of Bio-GO-SHIP is to produce systematic during repeat hydrographic surveys, with particular focus on planktonic ecosystem. plankton are an essential component earth climate system, form base oceanic food web thereby play important role in influencing security contributing Blue Economy. Despite its importance, biology largely under-sampled time space compared physical chemical properties. This lack information hampers our ability understand regulating biogeochemical processes fueling higher trophic levels, now future conditions. Traditionally, many methods used quantify ecosystem variables (EOVs), measures provide valuable ecosystem, have been expensive labor- time-intensive, limiting their large-scale deployment. last two decades, technologies developed matured, making it possible greatly expand capacity. These technologies, including cell imaging, bio-optical sensors 'omic tools, can be combined overlapping measurements key EOVs. New developments data management open sharing facilitate meaningful synthesis integration concurrent data. Here outline how leverages these technological advances knowledge understanding constituents function

Is the Time Right for Swarm Sensing in the Ocean?

Although the last several decades have seen tremendous growth in ocean technology and our ability to sense the ocean’s interior, most would agree that there is much to gain from having both higher spatial and temporal sampling. In this article I propose that a “next generation” of smaller, less expensive, more capable vehicles with even smaller, potentially less expensive, and more accurate sen...

Undergraduate Global Health Degrees: The Time is Right

In this issue of the journal, Drain and others report on one of the newest areas of global health growth, baccalaureate degrees for college and university undergraduates. Although global health certificate programs have been rapidly expanding, some experts and university leaders have been ambivalent about whether the field has developed enough to warrant offering majors. Global health issues in...

On the time to tracer equilibrium in the global ocean

An important issue for the interpretation of data from deep-sea cores is the time for tracers to be transported from the sea surface to the deep ocean. Global ocean circulation models can help shed light on the timescales over which a tracer comes to equilibrium in different regions of the ocean. In this note, we discuss how the most slowly decaying eigenmode of a model can be used to obtain a ...

On the Path to UHC – Global Evidence Must Go Local to Be Useful; Comment on “Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Is Published: A Theory of Change Is Needed for Translating Evidence to Health Policy”

The Disease Control Priorities (DCP) publications have pioneered new ways of thinking about investing in health. We agree with Norheim, that a useful first step to advance efforts to translate DCP’s global evidence into local health priorities, is to develop a clear Theory of Change (ToC). However, a ToC that aims to define how global evidence (DCP and others) can be used to inform national pol...
